Epiphany School Closing

by David Sunday, October 4, 2009 12:40 PM

One of the reasons I started this blog was so I could share my concerns and opinions with others.  There are just so many things in this world that are stupid and wrong, and it’s seems so many other people just don’t care about anyone else but themselves anymore.  Here is an example of one of those things, and a good time to expose some of the bullshit and downright uncaring crap that goes on this world.

I learned yesterday that the school my children attend is closing.  My wife and I send them to a Catholic school here in Saint Louis, Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic school.  Why do we send them to a Catholic school you ask?  Because we wanted them to get a good education, and because I think that some religion in a child’s life can be a good thing. [more]

If you would like to know more about this “little slice of heaven”, the Archdiocese of Saint Louis website has more information, including contact information.  Let your voice be heard!

Suffice it to say, I pay close to $10,000 a year to send my two children to this school.  My son started this school when he was in Kindergarten and he is now in the 8th grade and will graduate this year.  My daughter started the school in Kindergarten as well, and is now in the 4th grade.  Now we learn that this is the last year for the school, they have decided to close it.  Was it because of money?  What is because of finances?  Was it because of enrollment?

Nobody knows why, or I should say, nobody is willing to tell the truth as to why.  The new priest of the church, who has been here a couple years or so, doesn’t really want to run the school, “too much work” he says, “:overwhelming” he says.  How fitting for a priest to say something like this.  I mean for God’s sake he is a priest!  I will not get into the history of the Catholic church here, this is not the place for it.  But I expect more from a “man of God”, I expect someone who cares, who tries to help, who makes a concerted effort to help not only fellow human beings, but the neighborhood in which his church is in!

The school is run and overseen by a school committee, a committee of people that not only do not have any children in this school, do not even belong to the parish this school is in, but have no interest in even keeping the school open.  What pisses me off even more about all this is when I find out that this committee stopped applying for grants and financial assistance from the Archdiocese of St. Louis 5 years ago!

Now maybe it’s just me, but that really smells like this was decided long ago, and there has been a systematic effort to close the school for at least 5 years now.  Now all that in itself pisses a person off, but then to also discover that the school has managed to actually turn a profit EACH AND EVERY DAMN YEAR so far.  Yes I said a profit.  Between tuition, events, homecoming, picnics, etc., the school has manage to not only make enough money to keep going, but had enough left over for improvements, new computers, new playground equipment, etc, etc, etc.

So who decided to close it?  Why?  Why wasn’t a meeting held with the parents of children in the school to tell them this was coming or even being considered?  And what about the students, what happens to them?

Well don’t ask the Catholic church, at least not the Epiphany of our Lord Catholic church, because they don’t care.  That is blatantly obvious from the fact they are closing the school.  I guess the church and parish will be next, I mean damn, to expect to keep the church to remain open so some people can go worship God, how absurd is that.  I’m sure if running a school is hard, running a church is rough too, might as well close it too.

You might ask yourself why don’t you just send your kids to another school or even a public school. Well if you lived in Saint Louis you would understand, and if you don't live in Saint Louis let me explain.  The public school system in Saint Louis city sucks.  It is one of the worst public school systems in the entire country, if not the world, and that’s including third world countries that don’t have public schools!  There are other private schools, of which many I cannot afford, and some others call Magna schools.  They are good schools though, there are just too damn few of them, and you have to get on a waiting list to get into one.  The list is long, and is only going to get longer with our school closing.

Well, so I guess you should move then you idiot.  I’d love too, in fact I’ve wanted to move for 10 years, but my wife dearly loves the house we are in, and even though she has agreed that we do need to move, between the economy, the fact we both lost our jobs last year and have only recently gotten employed again, and the fact the housing economy sucks balls right now, I don’t know that we can move right now.

So what do we do?  Well frankly I’m not sure honestly, but I have several thoughts running through my head.  We are definitely going to work on the moving part of the plan, fixing up the house the best we can and look into putting it on the market and hoping we can find somewhere else, in a nice neighborhood, with a good school system, and sell this thing at the same time.

But the one thing I do know for sure is that I am going to find out what is going on at Epiphany and bring it to light for the all to see.  I don’t know if it’s corruption, greed, or just plain ole fashioned “we don’t give a shit about your kids” stuff or what, but I’m going to raise some hell and do some digging.

Our economy is in the shape it is in because of greed, lies and deceit, and it seems that this same type of thinking has come to permeate ever facet of our lives.  We are human beings, I want to live a nice, quiet, comfortable life and do the things I want to do.  I want to try and give my children a good life, hopefully a better one then I have, what parent wouldn’t want that for their child.  I try to help others when I can, and to teach my children that decency and respect for others is what makes you a good person.  Wow, it’s hard to teach that to your children when it seems so few others behave the same.

Anyway, enough is enough as far as I’m concerned, I think it’s past the time to stand up, walk out, and try and do something.  I know, that in the end, it probably won’t accomplish anything, or keep the school open, but it might make others think twice before screwing over other people, and it might persuade other people to stand up and fight for what they believe in.

My genuine sympathy to all the other parent’s with children going to Epiphany school, I feel your pain and burden.  To the teachers of this school, soon to lose their jobs, I’m sorry.  To the school committee that runs, or I should say ran, the school, and to the priest I say this.  Look out, because the proverbial shit is going to hit the proverbial fan.  I’m only one person, but your bullshit won’t just be swept under the rug this time, some day you will be held accountable for all the crap you have caused in this world.  That is not a threat, but a promise.

You can expect to hear from me soon, and hopefully others.  Oh and by the way, don’t be surprised if you start getting calls from the papers and television stations about this too, because I’m starting with them.  I know my odds are a million to one, but I’m also in the process of trying to arrange a meeting with our Bishop of Saint Louis, Bishop Robert J. Carlson.  I understand he is supposed to be a kind, caring individual, who believes in Catholic education.  I’d like to get his take on this, his thoughts, or find out if he even knows.

We’ll see what happens…………..stay tuned, this isn’t over yet.

People “pushing” their religion

by David Wednesday, September 30, 2009 9:33 AM

I am not what you would call a religious person.  Yes I believe in God, and I was raised as a Catholic, but as my Mother has pointed out to me for years, I have lost my faith and have fallen away from the Catholic church.  Yes I did, but for a number of reason’s I won’t go into here.

Anyway, what just drives me insane are people who try to “Save me” or get me to “See the light”, in other words, people shoving their religion and their beliefs down my throat.  To top it off, it inevitably is some poor lost misguided schmuck that you work with that is the one doing it! [more]

Take me for instance, I work at a nice place (not telling you where!), but we got a couple crazies their, one in particular that is always talking about God, and religion, and all the crap.  He even gives you books to read, on God, creationism, all that crap.  He just not only pisses you off, but creeps you out as well.  I think each person is entitle to their beliefs, but jeez man, don’t try to force me to see things your way.  I mean when I say I’m not interested, then I’M NOT INTERESTED.

Sometimes they do, leave you alone that is, they actually can respect the fact that you don’t see things their way, so be it.  But sometimes, some people, just don’t get it and just keep at you, day after day after day.

What can you do?  Me, I just ignore them the best I can and move on.  I got enough stuff to try to do, I don’t have the time to try and push my belief’s off on someone else.

An old friend of mine said something to me once that really stuck with me.  He was not a religious person either, and was raised in a Jewish home.  His parents were very religious, but did not try to push their beliefs onto their children, they let their children decide for themselves what to believe and not believe as they got older.

Anyway, one day my friend asked his Father, “Dad, you go to church everyday, pray every evening.  So what happens when you die and you find out it was all BS and there is no heaven?”.

His Dad replied “Well, I look at it this way.  If I’m right and their is a God and a heaven, then I have nothing to worry about.  If I’m wrong and there is no God or heaven, then I didn’t really do anything to hurt anybody else, and only ended up wasting some of my life on something that did not exist, but made me feel better as a person.  Besides, if I’m right and your wrong, your screwed”.

How true.

Twitter, Tweeting and all that Stuff

by David Saturday, September 26, 2009 4:24 PM

Everyone who hasn’t heard of Twitter raise your hand.

Yea I didn’t think so, if your on the Net (that’s short for Internet), you’ve most likely heard of, read about, looked at, or dear Lord, even use Twitter.

So what is the fascination with this Twitter and Tweeting anyway?  I mean you have celebrities flocking to it like crazy (as if they are normal anyway), telling us all about what they are doing, eating, drinking, thinking, etc.

You got people tweeting about sitting on the deck sipping a drink, laying in bed watching TV, even tweeting that they are in bed and almost asleep! [more]

Then there are the ones that tweet while driving, “Hey, driving down highway 40, traffic sucks, must be an accident”.  Uh yea, some idiot tweeting from his phone ran into a car and now has everything screwed up.

Then there are the Twitter followers, they are like forlorn geek groupies that have to live their lives through someone else because their life sucks so much.  I’ve got folks at work that tweet all day long, INSTEAD OF WORKING.  “Yea, supposed to be working on this project, but decided to take a break and tweet a bit”.  Wow, Thanks for sharing that, NOT.

I mean I guess if I saw worthwhile earth shattering late breaking information I might understand, but sorry, don’t see that.  I see people who just bought a new phone tweeting about their new phone, and other people starting Twitter accounts just so they can tweet cause everything else is tweeting.

Do I have a Twitter account you ask?  I did create one, I wanted to see the big fascination with it.  I made one post, said No Thanks, and that was it.  You want to know what’s even funnier still?  I got like 10 followers!, and I haven’t tweeted anything beyond that first tweet.  (Must have been one hell of a tweet!)

I mean besides people using it for absolute nonsense that I could care less about because I have a life Thank you very much, I have seen some companies use it in a manner that makes sense.  I mean gaming companies, and toy companies and such, use it to talk about new things with the company, or new products, or maybe software hot fixes.  That makes sense to me, that I can understand, but do you really care if Elvis is tweeting (yes there is an Elvis Tweeter, or that Ron Jeremy Porn King has a Twitter feed, or that the kid behind the cash register at the counter of the gas station down the street is tweeting instead of working?

I don’t, I don’t know why others do, I honestly don’t get it.  It’s kind of like blogging, I mean if you have nothing useful to offer, why start a blog. (Heh, this blog offers very useful and sage advice, besides, it keeps me sane and from telling my wife how crazy the world is, so she appreciates it.)

Pet CPR – You have GOT to be kidding

by David Saturday, September 26, 2009 9:16 AM

I was just randomly flipping through the channels on my DirectTV today (200 channels of pure bliss), and ran across a Pet care show on my local station, Fox 2 News.

Anyway, it was just a general show who’s host was a vet, and he was answering peoples questions.  This one lady sent in a question and asked if she should learn Pet CPR just in case something happened to her beloved pet Snoopy (that wasn’t it’s name, I don’t remember the name).

Anyway, I almost fell off the couch (yes couch, I was vegging).  First, I didn’t even know there was such a thing as Pet CPR, actually I’m not sure I could bring myself to give an animal mouth-to-mouth, I mean I’ve had my dog lick me in the mouth before and like YUCK. [more]

ANYWAY, what just floored me was here was this lady, I’d guess maybe her 50’s, that was wanting to know if she should learn Pet CPR because of her dog.  The vet asked if she new “normal” CPR (i.e. people CPR), and she said she did not.  So he suggested that yes, she should learn Pet CPR, that it could come in handy, and wouldn’t hurt to know it!

I mean WOW, if someone was choking or having a heart attack or Lord knows what else, this lady would stand there dumbfounded, unable to do anything, BUT if a dog or cat or gerbil or something were to choke, she could JUMP to the rescue and save the animals life.

Now don’t get me wrong, I like pet’s too, dogs in particular, I’ve grown up around them my entire life.  I’m sorry though, they are still animals and dammit, people come first in my mind.  I know that to some, their pet is the only friend or companion they have, and I can certainly understand the emotional bond one feels for their pet, but (wait for it!) folks, IT’S AN ANIMAL, NOT A HUMAN BEING.

I mean if you want to learn Pet CPR, ok, cool, but don’t you think you could maybe take the couple hours extra to learn Real People CPR.  I mean there is a slight difference, and well quite frankly, human beings are a bit more important in the grand scheme of things then pets are.

Sorry pet loving more then people folks, but it just struck me as really really weird.  As for you folks out there that treat your pets as part of the family, like you treat real people, well that will have to be another post.

Welcome! (you must be bored)

by David Saturday, September 26, 2009 8:46 AM

Welcome to my new blog!

The Internet has proved to be such a valuable resource and seems to contain a wealth of busllshit, that I just couldn’t resist from adding to it.

Actually this isn’t my first foray into blogging, but if I’m lucky I might stay interested long enough to do something with it.

This blog is not about anything special, it will contain everything from my political insights (scare stuff), and other running commentaries.  I am allowing comments to my posts, though depending on how things go I might turn that off, I HATE flame wars.

Some people might agree with my thoughts, other’s will not, and I’m sure there will be some who think I am everything from a racist to a crazed lunatic, but trust me I am not, I am just a regular down to earth middle aged middle class guy that lives in the Midwest.

I doubt you will find anything insightful, if you do let me know, but I hope you do enjoy your time here, and at the very least, found another way to simple kill a few minutes of your day.

Enjoy, and welcome.
