Epiphany School Closing

One of the reasons I started this blog was so I could share my concerns and opinions with others.  There are just so many things in this world that are stupid and wrong, and it’s seems so many other people just don’t care about anyone else but themselves anymore.  Here is an example of one of those things, and a good time to expose some of the bullshit and downright uncaring crap that goes on this world.

I learned yesterday that the school my children attend is closing.  My wife and I send them to a Catholic school here in Saint Louis, Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic school.  Why do we send them to a Catholic school you ask?  Because we wanted them to get a good education, and because I think that some religion in a child’s life can be a good thing. [more]

If you would like to know more about this “little slice of heaven”, the Archdiocese of Saint Louis website has more information, including contact information.  Let your voice be heard!

Suffice it to say, I pay close to $10,000 a year to send my two children to this school.  My son started this school when he was in Kindergarten and he is now in the 8th grade and will graduate this year.  My daughter started the school in Kindergarten as well, and is now in the 4th grade.  Now we learn that this is the last year for the school, they have decided to close it.  Was it because of money?  What is because of finances?  Was it because of enrollment?

Nobody knows why, or I should say, nobody is willing to tell the truth as to why.  The new priest of the church, who has been here a couple years or so, doesn’t really want to run the school, “too much work” he says, “:overwhelming” he says.  How fitting for a priest to say something like this.  I mean for God’s sake he is a priest!  I will not get into the history of the Catholic church here, this is not the place for it.  But I expect more from a “man of God”, I expect someone who cares, who tries to help, who makes a concerted effort to help not only fellow human beings, but the neighborhood in which his church is in!

The school is run and overseen by a school committee, a committee of people that not only do not have any children in this school, do not even belong to the parish this school is in, but have no interest in even keeping the school open.  What pisses me off even more about all this is when I find out that this committee stopped applying for grants and financial assistance from the Archdiocese of St. Louis 5 years ago!

Now maybe it’s just me, but that really smells like this was decided long ago, and there has been a systematic effort to close the school for at least 5 years now.  Now all that in itself pisses a person off, but then to also discover that the school has managed to actually turn a profit EACH AND EVERY DAMN YEAR so far.  Yes I said a profit.  Between tuition, events, homecoming, picnics, etc., the school has manage to not only make enough money to keep going, but had enough left over for improvements, new computers, new playground equipment, etc, etc, etc.

So who decided to close it?  Why?  Why wasn’t a meeting held with the parents of children in the school to tell them this was coming or even being considered?  And what about the students, what happens to them?

Well don’t ask the Catholic church, at least not the Epiphany of our Lord Catholic church, because they don’t care.  That is blatantly obvious from the fact they are closing the school.  I guess the church and parish will be next, I mean damn, to expect to keep the church to remain open so some people can go worship God, how absurd is that.  I’m sure if running a school is hard, running a church is rough too, might as well close it too.

You might ask yourself why don’t you just send your kids to another school or even a public school. Well if you lived in Saint Louis you would understand, and if you don't live in Saint Louis let me explain.  The public school system in Saint Louis city sucks.  It is one of the worst public school systems in the entire country, if not the world, and that’s including third world countries that don’t have public schools!  There are other private schools, of which many I cannot afford, and some others call Magna schools.  They are good schools though, there are just too damn few of them, and you have to get on a waiting list to get into one.  The list is long, and is only going to get longer with our school closing.

Well, so I guess you should move then you idiot.  I’d love too, in fact I’ve wanted to move for 10 years, but my wife dearly loves the house we are in, and even though she has agreed that we do need to move, between the economy, the fact we both lost our jobs last year and have only recently gotten employed again, and the fact the housing economy sucks balls right now, I don’t know that we can move right now.

So what do we do?  Well frankly I’m not sure honestly, but I have several thoughts running through my head.  We are definitely going to work on the moving part of the plan, fixing up the house the best we can and look into putting it on the market and hoping we can find somewhere else, in a nice neighborhood, with a good school system, and sell this thing at the same time.

But the one thing I do know for sure is that I am going to find out what is going on at Epiphany and bring it to light for the all to see.  I don’t know if it’s corruption, greed, or just plain ole fashioned “we don’t give a shit about your kids” stuff or what, but I’m going to raise some hell and do some digging.

Our economy is in the shape it is in because of greed, lies and deceit, and it seems that this same type of thinking has come to permeate ever facet of our lives.  We are human beings, I want to live a nice, quiet, comfortable life and do the things I want to do.  I want to try and give my children a good life, hopefully a better one then I have, what parent wouldn’t want that for their child.  I try to help others when I can, and to teach my children that decency and respect for others is what makes you a good person.  Wow, it’s hard to teach that to your children when it seems so few others behave the same.

Anyway, enough is enough as far as I’m concerned, I think it’s past the time to stand up, walk out, and try and do something.  I know, that in the end, it probably won’t accomplish anything, or keep the school open, but it might make others think twice before screwing over other people, and it might persuade other people to stand up and fight for what they believe in.

My genuine sympathy to all the other parent’s with children going to Epiphany school, I feel your pain and burden.  To the teachers of this school, soon to lose their jobs, I’m sorry.  To the school committee that runs, or I should say ran, the school, and to the priest I say this.  Look out, because the proverbial shit is going to hit the proverbial fan.  I’m only one person, but your bullshit won’t just be swept under the rug this time, some day you will be held accountable for all the crap you have caused in this world.  That is not a threat, but a promise.

You can expect to hear from me soon, and hopefully others.  Oh and by the way, don’t be surprised if you start getting calls from the papers and television stations about this too, because I’m starting with them.  I know my odds are a million to one, but I’m also in the process of trying to arrange a meeting with our Bishop of Saint Louis, Bishop Robert J. Carlson.  I understand he is supposed to be a kind, caring individual, who believes in Catholic education.  I’d like to get his take on this, his thoughts, or find out if he even knows.

We’ll see what happens…………..stay tuned, this isn’t over yet.
